Punk Veteran's First-Ever Deluxe Release Hits Stores July 8th

" The revered punk band BAD RELIGION is set to reissue last year's acclaimed "New Maps of Hell" with expanded features and bonus material on July 8. Lifelong dissenters and noted critics of the current administration (2004's "The Empire Strikes First" was a direct critique of Bush's pre-emptive policy), the band's 15th release ironically, but coincidentally, comes out just days after the 4th of July.
The deluxe version of "New Maps of Hell" includes the original 16-song CD, along with seven new acoustic tracks recorded by principal songwriters Greg Graffin (vocals) and Brett Gurewitz (guitars). Three of the acoustic songs are new, written specifically for this release; the other four tracks are new acoustic versions of BR classics such as 2004's hit song "Sorrow" and the perennial favorite "Skyscraper". Graffin and Gurewitz formed the idea of recording the EP to illustrate how they write songs: generally writing a song on just an acoustic guitar or piano, and then crafting it into the electrified scorchers they ultimately become later with the band.
Additionally, the release includes a DVD with an hour-long live performance that has never been seen before, along with music videos for "New Maps of Hell"'s two singles "Honest Goodbye" and "New Dark Ages", behind-the-scenes footage of Brett and Greg during the recording of the acoustic EP and more.
The all-new packaging pays homage to the band's hometown of Los Angeles, but unmasks the city with a gritty reality not usually associated with Tinseltown. Shot in the striking format of high dynamic range photography by local fine arts photographer Dave Bollock, the deluxe release also features a booklet of Bollock's work entitled "New Maps of Hell - City of Angels" and classic BAD RELIGION posters.

Greg Graffin was honored at the Cambridge Forum April 26 for “lifetime achievement in atheism, punk rock and science.

The event was held in conjunction with the presentation of the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard’s highest honor, the “Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award in Cultural Humanism.” The award, intended to honor a Humanist or atheist having made a lasting impact on US culture, was presented last year to renowned novelist Sir Salman Rushdie before a sold-out audience of 1100 that Rushdie likened to a celebration of “Atheistmas,” and will once again be conferred at Harvard’s Memorial Church. Graffin was selected for the 2008 award by the Harvard Secular Society, an undergraduate student group affiliated with the Humanist Chaplaincy.

The documentary Punk's Not Dead has been set for release on DVD on May 01, 2008. As previously reported, the documentary focuses on the past 30 years in punk rock, with the social impact it has shown on everything from the orginal counter-culture, through its marketable image of today. The cast consists of a wide variety of bands, labels and personalities; providing both interviews and performances. Current stars like Green Day, Good Charlotte and Sum 41; punk staples such as Bad Religion, Pennywise, Rancid and the Casualties; and pioneers like the Ramones, Minor Threat and the Dead Kennedys are just some of groups featured in the presentation. The producers are also giving away a signed guitar from Bad Religion, a Squier Mike Dirnt Precision Bass guitar autographed by Mike Dirnt of Green Day and an acoustic guitar signed by Rancid to selected pre-orders. Graffin Honoured For Achievement in Atheism, Punk Rock and Science

Bad Religion front-man Greg Graffin will be honoured for a lifetime achievement in atheism, punk rock, and science. Harvard University's prominent Humanist Chaplaincy community of atheists and agnostics will bestow the punk legend with its highest honour, the "Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award in Cultural Humanism." According to Epitaph's news page, Graffin's status as both a rock star, scientist (as part of UCLA's Faculty in Biology, he teaches a Life Sciences course that covers Darwin and natural selection) and "ideal role model for the nation's millions of non-religious youth" will receive the award on April 26, where he will also give an acoustic performance. Said Graffin about the achievement: "I always put education high on my list of priorities because I thought, 'Wouldn't it be neat if you can have a singer of your favorite band who also has something more to offer than looking cool' - which I don't - or dressing cool - which I don't. Those are the things that I try to inspire young people to do, whether it is in the lecture hall or on stage on the Warped Tour." Speaking about the community's decision, Greg Epstein of the Humanist Chaplain of Harvard University said: "Graffin is proof positive that atheists can be great ethical role models: young people idolize rock stars, and what more could you want from one than his lifelong dedication to science, education, and Humanism?" Last year the award was presented to author Sir Salman Rushdie for his contribution to making U.S. less God-fearing and more, er, atheistic.

Review : Bad Religion: not too old to rock

Short review about BR´s show at HOB , 21 March.

" It is hard to imagine punk rock without Bad Religion. Although the band has been around for nearly three decades, Bad Religion shows no signs of slowing down. Unparalleled in success, Bad Religion proves that it still knows how to sell out a show.

Outside the House of Blues in Anaheim on March 21, I was not at all surprised to see a packed crowd anxiously awaiting the arrival of the legendary band. I was surprised, however, at how young the crowd seemed to be. I would not have expected a band that began its career in the 1980s to currently have teenage fans, but I suppose this further proves that Bad Religion's music is inspirational enough to move teens today as it did more than 20 years ago.

Although they may have aged in appearance, the men of Bad Religion still held the presence of energized teenagers, lighting up the stage. They performed with immense passion, as if time had not passed and they were still in the midst of teenage angst. Greg Hetson and Brett Gurewitz jumped across stage, thrashing their heads about as they strummed their guitars. Greg Graffin thrashed out out lyrics of idealism and hopes of changing the world with such an ardor that it sent chills down my spine.

It's not difficult to see why the band has maintained such success for such a long period of time. Through its music, Bad Religion inflicts a sense of raw reality of the maladies in the world in a way that shakes listeners to the core. Lost in a world of synthesized pop music and cookie-cutter songwriting, Bad Religion breaks the mold. By touching on subjects of substance, the band intellectually stimulates its audiences. As the band began its performance of "I Want to Conquer the World," I felt a sense of elation.

It is songs like this that remind me that good music does still exist, even though most of the industry has sold out to mainstream media. Sophisticated and meaningful lyrics set this band apart from other punk bands. This can in great part be attributed to songwriter and lead vocalist Graffin, who received a master's degree from UCLA and a Ph.D. from Cornell, proving that punk rock music can be deeper than just projections of anti-establishment and teenage angst.

In a fallen world of war and greed, where materialism and aesthetics inhabit our everyday lives, bands like Bad Religion remind us that there is a bigger picture. From the looks of the crowd that swarmed the stage, maybe a band like Bad Religion is what we need right now: to turn us away from the depreciating world, to stir us in a way that most current music cannot.

Although my time spent with Bad Religion was short, it was without a doubt significant. Its music holds something deeper than today's pop culture can even scratch the surface of. To witness a performance from a band as influential as Bad Religion is an enlightening experience that I will not soon forget. "

Jay B. : A friend of ours, adam carolla, has written, produced and stars in a new movie called "the hammer", and has put the song infected in the soundtrack (which is fantastic by the way! the movie and the soundtrack...).
the cool thing is he is just using word of mouth and a grass roots advertising campaign for the movie. greg and i were recently on his morning radio show, which you can podcast, and thought we should be part of the campaign. i saw the movie last week and had a great time, so i give it my thumbs up...

The Humanist Chaplaincy, a Harvard University organization honoring cultural and scientific work by the openly non-religious, will present its Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award in Cultural Humanism to Bad Religion singer/UCLA biology professor Greg Graffin. There's more than a cool band name at work here: Bad Religion front man Greg Graffin will receive an award from a Harvard-based atheist intellectual's community.
